About the Mountain Zebra
The mountain zebra is a specialised zebra of southern Africa adapted to rugged, mountainous and rocky terrain. It has bold black-and-white stripes, a distinctive dewlap and a grid-like pattern of stripes over the rump. It is primarily a grazer, feeding mainly on grasses but also browsing when necessary. Mountain zebras live in small family groups led by a stallion, while bachelor males form separate groups. They are well adapted to dry environments and can survive in areas where water is limited.
How to identify the Mountain Zebra
Distinctive zebra with broad black-and-white stripes, a short erect mane and a clean white underside. Compared with plains zebra, the stripes are generally broader and the body is more robust, while the belly is unstriped.
