About the Little Grebe
The little grebe is a small freshwater diving bird found on ponds, lakes, dams, marshes and slow-moving waterways with suitable vegetation. It has a compact body, short neck, pointed bill and lobed toes adapted for swimming and diving. Breeding adults develop rich chestnut and dark plumage with a distinctive yellow-green bill marking. It feeds mainly on small fish, aquatic insects, crustaceans and other small aquatic animals, catching prey during short underwater dives.
How to identify the Little Grebe
Small waterbird with a compact body, short tail and short pointed bill. Adults have a dark glossy head and back, rich chestnut neck and breast, and a pale or yellowish eye. Often dives suddenly when disturbed.
