Where to see Horned Adder in South Africa

About the Horned Adder

A short, stout little viper of the arid sand and scrub country of southwestern Africa, easily told apart from other vipers by a single large horn-like scale above each eye. It is one of the smallest members of the Bitis genus and, like its relatives, is a sit-and-wait ambush predator relying on camouflage against the sandy ground it inhabits.

How to identify the Horned Adder

A single, large horn-like scale above each eye distinguishes it from other African adders, including the similar but separate Many-horned Adder (Bitis cornuta)

Did you know?

Its venom is considered one of the weakest in the Bitis genus by some researchers, though older reports describe fatalities, and its bites remain rare enough that little epidemiological data exists.

Also known as: Horned Puff Adder, Horned Viper
