When to see Horned Adder in Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park
Horned Adder are most active late afternoon into dusk (17:00 to 20:00) and at night (19:00 to 05:00). Much of their activity falls outside gate hours, so the first drive after the gates open and the last hour before they close give you the best chance.
This is Horned Adder's general behavior. Once enough sightings are logged in Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, this page also shows when they're actually seen here.
About the Horned Adder
A short, stout little viper of the arid sand and scrub country of southwestern Africa, easily told apart from other vipers by a single large horn-like scale above each eye. It is one of the smallest members of the Bitis genus and, like its relatives, is a sit-and-wait ambush predator relying on camouflage against the sandy ground it inhabits.
How to identify the Horned Adder
A single, large horn-like scale above each eye distinguishes it from other African adders, including the similar but separate Many-horned Adder (Bitis cornuta)
