About the Aardwolf
The aardwolf is a small, specialised member of the hyena family that is primarily insectivorous rather than a predator or scavenger. It has a slender body, long legs, large ears and a yellowish-brown coat marked with vertical dark stripes and a mane along the back. It is mainly nocturnal and feeds almost exclusively on termites, using its long sticky tongue to collect them from the ground. Aardwolves are generally solitary or found in pairs and are strongly associated with open grassland and savanna.
How to identify the Aardwolf
Small, slender hyena relative with a fox-like appearance, long legs, large pointed ears and a narrow muzzle. The coat is pale yellowish-grey with vertical dark stripes on the body and dark horizontal bands on the legs.
