About the Southern Red Bishop
The southern red bishop is a small, seed-eating weaver found mainly in southern Africa, particularly around grassland, wetlands and areas with tall grasses and reeds. Breeding males develop striking red-orange plumage over the head, breast and body, contrasting with black markings, while females and non-breeding birds are much duller brown. It feeds mainly on grass seeds and other plant material, with insects also taken, especially during breeding. It is often seen in groups and can form large flocks outside the breeding season.
How to identify the Southern Red Bishop
Small, compact weaver. Breeding males have a vivid red head and breast, black facial mask and dark wings with a brownish body. Females and non-breeding birds are much duller brown and streaked.
