About the Woodland Kingfisher
The woodland kingfisher is a colourful African kingfisher associated mainly with woodland, savanna, riverine vegetation and gardens. It has a bright red bill, blue wings and back, a white or pale chest and distinctive black markings around the eyes and shoulders. Unlike many kingfishers, it is not strongly dependent on water and feeds primarily on insects and other terrestrial prey, including reptiles, frogs and small animals. It usually hunts from an exposed perch before making a rapid attack on prey.
How to identify the Woodland Kingfisher
Medium-sized kingfisher with a grey head, brown back and wings, pale blue flight feathers and a striking bright blue rump and tail. The bill is large and red-orange, while the underside is generally pale.
