Where to see White-breasted Cormorant in South Africa
About the White-breasted Cormorant
A large, glossy dark-brown cormorant of Sub-Saharan Africa's rivers, dams and coastlines, easily told from other cormorants by its white throat, foreneck and breast. It dives from the surface to chase fish underwater, often to considerable depth, then perches upright on rocks, snags or dead trees with wings held open to dry.
How to identify the White-breasted Cormorant
Adults show a clean white throat, foreneck and breast against otherwise dark, glossy plumage; the white thigh patch appears in breeding condition. Often seen standing erect on exposed perches with wings spread to dry after diving.
Did you know?
It swims low in the water with just its head and neck showing, then dives to pursue fish, sometimes reaching depths of around 10 metres before surfacing to swallow its catch.
Also known as: Witborskormorant
