About the White backed Vulture
The white-backed vulture is a medium-sized African vulture and one of the continent's most important scavengers. Adults have dark brown plumage, a pale neck and a distinctive white area across the upper back and lower back that is particularly visible in flight. It is primarily a carrion feeder and often gathers in large numbers around carcasses, using its powerful bill to tear flesh. It is strongly associated with savanna, woodland and open habitats and relies heavily on its excellent eyesight to locate food.
How to identify the White backed Vulture
Medium-sized vulture with a mostly pale grey-brown body, dark flight feathers, a bare greyish head and neck, and a relatively slender bill. In flight, the contrast between the pale body and dark wing edges is useful for identification.
