About the Steppe Eagle
The steppe eagle is a large migratory eagle that breeds across parts of Eurasia and spends the non-breeding season in Africa. It is a powerful bird of prey with broad wings and generally dark brown plumage, often showing variation between individuals and age classes. In Africa it occurs mainly in open habitats and feeds opportunistically on small mammals, birds, reptiles, insects and carrion. It is a strong soaring bird capable of travelling enormous distances during migration.
How to identify the Steppe Eagle
Large dark brown eagle with broad wings, a relatively short tail and long feathered legs. Adults are generally dark brown with paler feathers on the head and upper breast; juveniles are considerably paler and more streaked.
