Where to see Southern Pied Babbler in South Africa
About the Southern Pied Babbler
A medium-sized, cooperatively breeding bird of dry Kalahari savanna, with a white head and body contrasting with dark brown wings and tail. It lives in noisy groups of two to sixteen, spending most of its foraging time on the ground digging for invertebrates. Groups strongly defend their territory year-round with wing and vocal displays, and all members help raise the young of a single dominant breeding pair.
How to identify the Southern Pied Babbler
White head and body contrasting sharply with dark brown wings and tail; almost always seen foraging on the ground in a noisy group rather than alone
Did you know?
Adults teach fledglings with a distinct "purr" call given at each food delivery, luring young out of the nest and later recruiting them to good foraging sites. It is one of the first confirmed cases of teaching behaviour in a wild bird.
