About the Nyala
The nyala is a medium-sized antelope of southeastern Africa, strongly associated with dense woodland, thickets and areas close to water. It shows pronounced sexual dimorphism: females are reddish-brown with prominent white vertical stripes, while adult males are larger and darker with shaggy coats and long spiral horns. Nyalas are primarily browsers, feeding on leaves, shoots, fruits and other vegetation, but will also graze when conditions allow. They are generally social, with females and young forming small groups while males may be solitary or form bachelor groups.
How to identify the Nyala
Medium-sized antelope with a striking reddish-brown coat and white vertical stripes on the flanks. Males are darker and have short spiral horns, while females are generally lighter and hornless. Males also have a distinctive dark shaggy mane along the neck and back.
