About the Nile Crocodile
The Nile crocodile is a large, powerful semi-aquatic reptile found across much of sub-Saharan Africa. It has a broad head, extremely strong jaws, a heavily armoured body and a long muscular tail. It is strongly associated with rivers, lakes, dams, wetlands and other permanent water. Nile crocodiles are opportunistic predators that feed on fish, birds, reptiles, mammals and carrion, with larger individuals capable of taking very large prey. They often bask on riverbanks during the day and remain partially submerged when hunting or avoiding heat.
How to identify the Nile Crocodile
Very large aquatic reptile with a broad elongated snout, powerful tail, four short legs and eyes and nostrils positioned high on the head. Adults are generally olive-brown to dark grey above with a lighter belly.
