About the Great Egret
The great egret is a large, elegant white heron found around freshwater and coastal wetlands, rivers, lakes, dams, marshes and estuaries. It has entirely white plumage, a long pointed yellow bill, long black legs and a long neck. It usually hunts by standing motionless or walking slowly through shallow water before striking fish, frogs, reptiles, insects and other small prey with its bill. It may occur alone or gather in groups where food is abundant.
How to identify the Great Egret
Very large white heron with long black legs, a long yellow bill and a long S-shaped neck. Breeding adults develop long ornamental plumes on the back and chest, while the black flight feathers contrast strongly with the white body in flight.
