Where to see Common Ostrich in South Africa

About the Common Ostrich

The world's largest and heaviest living bird, flightless and built for speed on the open plains. Males are mostly black with white wing and tail plumes, while females and juveniles are greyish brown for camouflage. Ostriches roam savannah and semi-arid habitat in loose flocks, relying on excellent eyesight and powerful legs to spot and outrun predators.

How to identify the Common Ostrich

By far the tallest and bulkiest bird on the plains; look for the long bare pink or grey neck and legs, two-toed feet, and males' striking black-and-white plumage against females' duller brown-grey

Did you know?

Cannot fly, but can sprint at up to 70 km/h (the fastest of any bird on land), and a single kick from its powerful legs can be lethal to a predator.

Also known as: Volstruis, Ostrich
