About the Common Kestrel
The common kestrel is a small falcon widely distributed across Africa, Europe and Asia. It is recognised by its pointed wings, long tail and characteristic hovering hunting technique, often remaining almost stationary in the air while scanning the ground below. It feeds mainly on small mammals, particularly rodents, but also takes lizards, insects and small birds. It occurs in a wide range of open habitats including grassland, savanna, farmland and semi-urban areas.
How to identify the Common Kestrel
Small, slender falcon with pointed wings, a long tail and a distinctive hovering hunting flight. Males have a grey head and tail with a rufous back and wings; females are generally more uniformly brown and heavily barred.
