About the Blue Monkey

Also known regionally as the Samango Monkey, this forest-dwelling primate lives almost entirely in the canopy of evergreen and riverine forest, descending to the ground infrequently. It has a slate-grey to olive coat with a dark cap and a pale patch on the forehead, and lives in tight, territorial troops centred on related females. In South African parks it is confined to dense forest patches rather than open bushveld.

How to identify the Blue Monkey

A canopy-dwelling monkey with a grey-olive coat, dark face, blackish cap and legs, and a pale forehead patch (the "diadem"). Distinguished from the Vervet Monkey by its darker, more uniform coat, forest habitat, and near-total avoidance of open ground.

Did you know?

Troops give distinct alarm calls for different predators, and neighbouring troops engage in loud, ritualised vocal duels at territory boundaries rather than physical fighting.

Also known as: Samango-aap, Samango Monkey
