About the Swainsons Spurfowl
Swainson's spurfowl is a medium-sized ground-dwelling gamebird of southern Africa, particularly associated with dry savanna, grassland, scrub and woodland. It has cryptic brown and grey plumage that provides excellent camouflage, while the male has a prominent spur on the leg. It feeds mainly on seeds, grasses, roots and other plant material, supplemented by insects and other invertebrates. It is usually encountered in pairs or small groups and relies on running and concealment more often than flight when disturbed.
How to identify the Swainsons Spurfowl
Large, robust spurfowl with mottled brown plumage, a pale throat and chest, reddish-brown facial skin and strong legs. Usually encountered walking or running through grassland rather than flying.
