About the Giant Kingfisher

The giant kingfisher is Africa's largest kingfisher and is strongly associated with rivers, lakes, dams, wetlands and other freshwater habitats. It has dark brown and white plumage, a large powerful bill and a distinctive crest. It usually hunts from a perch overlooking water, diving or dropping down to capture fish, frogs, crabs and other aquatic prey. It is generally solitary or found in pairs and often remains close to suitable fishing areas.

How to identify the Giant Kingfisher

Large kingfisher with a powerful black bill, dark head and back, white throat and breast, and dark wings with white spotting. The body is heavily patterned and the bird has a large, robust appearance compared with smaller African kingfishers.
