About the Impala
The impala is a medium-sized antelope of eastern and southern Africa, recognised by its reddish-brown coat, white underparts, black markings on the hind legs and distinctive lyre-shaped horns in males. It is primarily a grazer but also browses on leaves, shoots and other vegetation depending on conditions. Impala are highly social and live in herds, with group structure changing according to season, sex and breeding conditions. They are exceptionally agile and can leap several metres when escaping predators.
How to identify the Impala
Medium-sized reddish-brown antelope with a distinctive white underbelly, black-tipped tail and characteristic black markings on the hind legs. Both sexes have slender ringed horns, although females are usually hornless.
