About the Yellow-billed Egret

A medium-sized white egret found around seasonally flooded marshes, grassland, lake margins, saltpans, estuaries and rivers across sub-Saharan Africa. It resembles the larger Great Egret but has a shorter, stockier bill and a gape line that stops at the eye rather than extending past it. It forages by slowly stalking shallow water and wet grass, stabbing at fish, frogs and aquatic insects, and is often seen singly or in small loose groups.

How to identify the Yellow-billed Egret

Medium white egret, smaller and stockier-billed than the Great Egret; the bill's gape line ends at the eye rather than running past it. Bill and lores turn orange-red to yellow with a green flush in breeding plumage, and long back/breast plumes appear.
