About the Squacco Heron
The squacco heron is a small, stocky African heron associated with freshwater wetlands, marshes, rivers, lakes and shallow pools surrounded by dense vegetation. It has a brownish back, pale underparts, a yellowish bill and legs, and a compact shape that can make it surprisingly difficult to detect among reeds and vegetation. It feeds mainly on frogs, fish, insects, crustaceans and other small aquatic animals, usually hunting alone from the edge of shallow water.
How to identify the Squacco Heron
Small, stocky heron with a short neck, short legs and a broad dark bill. Adults have a yellowish-brown head and neck, grey back and wings, and pale underparts. When disturbed, it often freezes among reeds and vegetation.
