About the Side striped Jackal
The side-striped jackal is a medium-sized African canid recognised by the pale stripe running along each side of its body and the relatively dark back. It is generally more closely associated with moist woodland, grassland and areas with dense vegetation than the black-backed jackal. It is an opportunistic omnivore, feeding on small mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, insects, fruit and other plant material, as well as carrion. It may be solitary, occur in pairs or live in small family groups.
How to identify the Side striped Jackal
Medium-sized jackal with a grey-brown coat, dark saddle or back markings, pale underside and distinctive dark stripe along the flanks. The tail is bushy with a darker tip and the ears are relatively large.
