About the Eland (Common)
The common eland is one of Africa's largest antelopes and is recognised by its massive body, vertical white stripes, shoulder hump and long, spiralled horns in both sexes. It is highly adaptable and occurs in savanna, woodland, grassland and semi-arid habitats. Common eland are mixed feeders, browsing on leaves and shoots while also grazing on grasses. They are social and may form herds ranging from small groups to several dozen animals, with larger temporary gatherings possible when conditions are favourable.
How to identify the Eland (Common)
Very large antelope with a tan to reddish-brown coat, distinctive vertical body markings in some individuals, a dark dewlap and a black-tipped tail. Both sexes have thick, spiralled horns, although males are generally larger and more heavily built.
