About the Cape Ground Squirrel
The Cape ground squirrel is a highly social, diurnal squirrel of southern Africa, commonly found in dry grassland, savanna and semi-arid habitats. It has a sandy-brown coat, pale underparts and a long, bushy tail often held over the back. It lives in communal burrow systems and spends much of the day foraging for seeds, roots, bulbs and other plant material, while also eating insects and other small food items. Groups rely on multiple individuals watching for predators while others feed.
