About the African Darter
The African darter is a long-necked waterbird found around freshwater and coastal wetlands throughout much of sub-Saharan Africa. Its slender body, long pointed bill and snake-like neck give it a distinctive appearance, particularly when swimming with only its head and neck above the surface. It catches fish and other aquatic prey by spearing them with its bill while diving underwater. After feeding, it is frequently seen perched with its wings spread to dry.
