About the Black Heron
The black heron is a medium-sized dark heron found around shallow freshwater habitats across much of sub-Saharan Africa. Adults have predominantly black to dark slate-grey plumage, dark legs and yellow facial skin and feet. It feeds mainly on small fish and aquatic prey. The species is particularly famous for its umbrella-feeding technique, spreading its wings over its head to create shade and improve its ability to detect and catch prey.
