Want to know where and when to find Jamesons Red Rock Rabbit? opspoor shows recent sightings across South Africa's parks and when each species is usually active.
About the Jamesons Red Rock Rabbit
A rufous-brown, nocturnal rabbit of rocky kopjes, canyons and cliffs, relying on rock crevices and boulders for shelter rather than a burrow. It grazes on grasses and fresh shoots at night, remaining hidden by day and fleeing back to cover the moment it is disturbed. Unlike hyraxes that share its rocky habitat, it does not bask openly on exposed rocks.
How to identify the Jamesons Red Rock Rabbit
Rufous-brown coat with large, sparsely haired ears sometimes tipped black; distinguished from Smith's Red Rock Rabbit by its shorter ears and longer tail, and does not share range with it
Did you know?
When flushed it stays hidden until the last possible moment, then bolts explosively for the nearest rock crevice rather than running across open ground.
Also known as: Jameson's Red Rock Hare
