About the Giraffe
The giraffe is the world's tallest living land animal, recognised by its extremely long neck and legs, distinctive coat pattern and small horn-like ossicones. It is primarily a browser, using its long tongue and prehensile lips to feed on leaves, shoots and other vegetation, particularly from trees such as acacias. Giraffes are generally social and occur in loose, changing groups rather than tightly structured herds. They are found mainly in savanna, woodland and other open habitats where sufficient browse is available.
How to identify the Giraffe
Very tall mammal with an exceptionally long neck and legs, sloping back, large ears and two horn-like ossicones on the head. The coat has a distinctive patchwork pattern, with colour and pattern varying between giraffe populations.
